My sweet lil' parakeet has been sick since Saturday. My bf and I were raring to go and make a trip up to Fort Myers for Labor Day when my bf noticed that Clementine was behaving oddly. At first I thought she was just tired, but she could hardly open her eyes and her feathers were all fluffed up. We debated about what to do, taking her to an avian vet is very expensive ($52! for a visit) and leaving her for over 2 days was a risk we didn't want to take, so I dug out from my closet a large shoebox and we gently settled Clemi into it. Off we drove up to Fort Myers with the shoebox on my lap. I think I checked on her almost every three seconds!
When we got to my parents' house, we transferred her to a large green bucket and stuck a wooden perch in it. My bf and I realized that she so weak that she didn't even have the energy to eat, so we bought some baby bird food and decided to hand-feed her. Every two hours my bf and I took turns taking care of our dear Clemi.
Long story short, Clementine survived the weekend and the trip back home. Although she's not out of the woods yet, she's ten times better than she was before. She's got her appetite back, and is even preening herself. I hadn't realized how much love I had for this tiny bird until she got sick. It's amazing the impact that pets have on people . . .
My Darling Clementine get well soon, I miss your sweet chirps in the mornings.
