Materials: 1. glass jar 2. glue gun or tacky glue 3. felt 4. tracing paper 5. cotton fabric 6. buttons 7. embroidery floss 8. embroidery needle 9. bone folder or any blunt-edged tool 10. scissors 11. pencil
Steps:
On some lined paper, write the word you'd like to have embroidered for your jar's lid (it's best to measure your jar's lid so you have an idea on length and size of your font). Turn over the paper and, using tracing paper, trace over the reverse of your word in pencil. Set your traced word aside.
Next, trace a circle that's about a quarter larger than your jar's lid on some cotton fabric (do not cut your fabric circle just yet!). Figure out the center of the traced circle, take your traced word and position it to your liking. With a bone folder rub over the tracing paper. With enough pressure, your word should transfer onto the fabric.
Now it's time to embroider! Thread your needle with 3 strands of your floss and sew on some buttons. Use a backstitch or running stitch to embroider your word.
Once you're done stitching, cut your fabric circle, and two smaller circles out of felt (one should be slightly larger than the other). To add some cushioning, glue the bigger felt circle onto your lid's top (the other will cover its interior).
Take your fabric circle and do a running stitch all around it (with a half inch seam allowance, give or take). Before and after you stitch, make sure to leave a tail of thread that’s a couple of inches long. You’ll need those tails to pull and gather up your fabric around the jar's lid.
After gathering the fabric circle around the lid, tie a loose knot. Glue around the lip of the lid, pressing down the fabric until it's completely tacked down. Finally glue on the smaller felt circle to the lid's interior.
Yay! Now you have a wonderfully revamped jar to store your buttons, pins, trims, or whatever you please! Have a great Thursday! Sue

Oh I Love this! You should sell these too!
They are so bright & cheery. I have all my buttons in re-used candle jars. They have nice embossed lids but I will have to try this.
Thanks for the share!

Just coming back to tell you that I've made three button (or 'knapper' as we say in Norway) jars. I love them, and I pretty much love you for sharing.
Here's a link to the result, regretfully in Norwegian but you can see the pictures... http://smuleblogg.blogspot.com/2010/08/knappeglass-nytt-liv-i-gamle.html
